ESE David Wasson: Welcome all. Andrew should be along any minute.
2007-09-05 11:00:51.0
ESE David Wasson: Hello all. Andrew should be logging in now to start his chat. Smiler
2007-09-05 11:03:10.0
NWBama: Cool
2007-09-05 11:03:14.0
NWBama: Good afternoon and roll tide my fellow Crimsomaniacs
2007-09-05 11:04:00.0
atjst: HI
2007-09-05 11:05:06.0
gbrockh: How do you feel about Bama's chances with A. Brown?
2007-09-05 11:05:09.0
ESE David Wasson: And there he is. Welcome, all, Andrew Bone -- our Tuscaloosa News recruiting expert. He chats each week from 1-2 p.m. Andrew, fire away!
2007-09-05 11:05:50.0
Andrew Bone: I think Alabama has a great chance with Arthur Brown. He loved his visit to Tuscaloosa in the summer. I expect him to return for an official visit.
2007-09-05 11:05:55.0
Nashvilletider: Do you have any insight on what Saban does differently/better when it comes to recruiting.
2007-09-05 11:06:50.0
Andrew Bone: The difference I see with coach Saban and his assistant coaches is the work ethic. They are dedicated to recruiting the best players in the country.
2007-09-05 11:08:00.0
Go Bama Go!: Will Star's commitment help with other recruits such as Julio?
2007-09-05 11:08:34.0
Andrew Bone: I think so. Star told me last night he is going to start calling recruits. He and Julio worked out together at Alabama's camp.
2007-09-05 11:08:39.0
wr5r5w5: any word on julio jones?
2007-09-05 11:09:23.0
Andrew Bone: He is still keeping everything quiet. I would expect to see him in Tuscaloosa when Georgia comes to town.
2007-09-05 11:09:34.0
NWBama: I have heard opinions that Star Jackson will be used as a wide receiver instead of a quarterback is there anything to this
2007-09-05 11:10:16.0
Andrew Bone: I think he is a quarterback all the way. I have told many people Jackson is a quarterback who is also an athlete. Not an athlete who also plays quarterback.
2007-09-05 11:10:30.0
atjst: will we get any more players this week?
2007-09-05 11:11:05.0
Andrew Bone: I don't think anyone else will commit this week unless it's someone who is under the radar. Most of the big names are waiting.
2007-09-05 11:11:12.0
NWBama: Who do you think the next commitment will be
2007-09-05 11:11:50.0
Andrew Bone: Right now I would say either Barrett Jones or Chris Jordan
2007-09-05 11:11:54.0
Scoooby: I keep hearing that AJ McCarron is a Bama lean. How do you think Star Jackson commitment affects the possibility of AJ coming?
2007-09-05 11:13:10.0
Andrew Bone: I don't think it will effect his decision at all. McCarron is a guy who understands there will be competition at any school. McCarron did grow up a big Alabama fan but his first official in-state offer came from Auburn.
2007-09-05 11:13:11.0
Go Bama Go!: It sounds like Major was a big part of Star's decision to commit. Was he thought os as a good recruiter when he was brought in?
2007-09-05 11:14:16.0
Andrew Bone: I don't know if he was considered a great recruiter coming in but I think before long he will be considered among the best in the country.
2007-09-05 11:14:28.0
flash24ala: as great as julio jones looks on film, would it be a devastaing loss if he chose somewhere else? considering other wr and athlete commits
2007-09-05 11:15:54.0
Andrew Bone: It's probably the best year of receivers I have ever seen. Alabama has some great wide receivers committed and Julio would be icing on the cake. He is a player Alabama needs to get.
2007-09-05 11:15:58.0
wr5r5w5: What are our chances of being in tbhe top 3 in recruiting this year?
2007-09-05 11:16:41.0
Andrew Bone: I think Alabama has a great chance. There are still several top prospects left on the board like Julio Jones, Jerrell Harris, T.J. Bryant, Arthur Brown and Antoine McClain.
2007-09-05 11:16:45.0
sbullington: How many more OL do you think we will take? And what is your best guess with who they are?
2007-09-05 11:17:28.0
Andrew Bone: I think Alabama will take two more offensive linemen. I think they end up with Barrett Jones and Antoine McClain. Right now I think Cordy Glenn is leaning toward UGA.
2007-09-05 11:17:36.0
Nashvilletider: Some of my AU friends say that we are hurting ourselves by locking up these recruits early. He said they (AU) will have more spots open to get the proven players at the end ot their senior seasons. Your thoughts??
2007-09-05 11:19:05.0
ESE David Wasson: Great chat so far. Keep those questions coming for Andrew Bone, who is here until 2 p.m. each week! You can catch Andrew's work each day at tidesports.com, and at scout.com.
2007-09-05 11:19:05.0
Andrew Bone: I think the Alabama coaching staff are the best evaluaters. I think Auburn fans are a little uneasy right now with the way Alabama is locking down the state.
2007-09-05 11:19:21.0
NWBama: of the existing 4* commitments we have are any of them expected to be upgraded to 5* status before signing day?
2007-09-05 11:20:32.0
Andrew Bone: We are constantly evaluating prospects. I think a few will have a chance to move to five-stars. Those players include Tyler Love and Burton Scott. A player I think we move to five-stars who is not committed is Antoine McClain from Anniston.
2007-09-05 11:20:37.0
AlanTIde: Andrew, do we really have a legit shot at Arthur Brown and his brother?
2007-09-05 11:21:29.0
Andrew Bone: Well considering his brother, Bryce, is in a facebook group called "Brown Brothers + Nick Saban =National Championship" I think so.
2007-09-05 11:21:47.0
Scoooby: Do you think that Sabans experience with Jamarcus Russell and Applewhites experience coaching Vince Young were instrumental in recruiting the Rivals #2 dual-threat QB?
2007-09-05 11:23:35.0
Andrew Bone: If you are referring to Star Jackson, yes. He wants to be around coaches that will make him a better player.
2007-09-05 11:23:39.0
atjst: How do we look with cordy glenn and A mcclain ?
2007-09-05 11:24:41.0
Andrew Bone: It's a tought call with Glenn but I would have to say UGA right now. Antoine McClain is leaning toward Alabama. It's going to be a great in-state battle for him.
2007-09-05 11:24:47.0
NWBama: Any thoughts about making Cecil Hurt giving you a spot on his new show? Wink
2007-09-05 11:25:19.0
Andrew Bone: haha, no comment
2007-09-05 11:25:20.0
srsupertech: how are we looking in the tight end recruits? I would love to see this open up for Bama
2007-09-05 11:25:59.0
ESE David Wasson: Y'all should see the setup we have going for The Cecil Hurt Show, fyi. It is BOSS. I'm talking neon and leather, people.
2007-09-05 11:26:52.0
Andrew Bone: We have Devonta Bolton and Brad Smelley who are both being considered as future H-Backs. I think the true tight end in this class could be Tyler Edwards. He is down to Alabama and LSU. LSU has a tight end commitment but he grew up a fan of the Tigers. His older brother played for coach Saban when he was at LSU.
2007-09-05 11:26:56.0
joe61vette: Any cornerback prospects that are likely commits?
2007-09-05 11:28:57.0
Andrew Bone: We certainly have stock piled on cornerbacks over the last few years but I could see T.J. Bryant, from Tallahassee-Lincoln, (Fla.), coming to Bama. Lincoln is a pipeline to FSU. Bryant has visited Tuscaloosa and has stated several times he wants to go to a school where the best receiver in the country goes. He wants to go up against the best competition every day at practice. Hint-Julio Jones.
2007-09-05 11:29:35.0
Scoooby: Besides Arthur Brown, what other premier LB's are we recruiting?
2007-09-05 11:30:38.0
Andrew Bone: Jerrell Harris and Chris Jordan are both studs. Jordan is a running back but I believe will end up as a linebacker. Alabama has offered two junior in-state linebackers. Tana Patrick and Nico Johnson. Both are expected to be National Top 100 players.
2007-09-05 11:30:48.0
sbullington: Who are the top DT's that we have a better than average shot of signing right now?
2007-09-05 11:31:41.0
Andrew Bone: Kerry Murphy will re-sign with the Tide. He is at Hargrave right now. Reggie Ellis, from Washington D.C. is a player to keep an eye on.
2007-09-05 11:32:58.0
sbullington: What about RB, seems Saban loves signing them, any one we would make room for besides the kid from MS?
2007-09-05 11:34:37.0
Andrew Bone: We have commitments from Ivan Matchett and Jermaine Preyear. I think Ken Davis would be a possibility. Dontavious Jackson is likely heading to UGA but Alabama would love to sign him.
2007-09-05 11:35:07.0
Andrew Bone: Brandon Bolden out of Louisiana is a player the Alabama coaches loved at camp.
2007-09-05 11:35:14.0
ray_keith: Will we close strong?
2007-09-05 11:35:44.0
Andrew Bone: Alabama should close very strong. The class looks great and it's only going to get better.
2007-09-05 11:35:52.0
walla012: how many players can you sign, i thought it was 30 and you could only give 25 scholly's
2007-09-05 11:35:55.0
NWBama: David, are you talking neon and leather as furniture and set lighting or as apparel? I just need to know what kind of mindset to be in when I tune in. Big Grin
2007-09-05 11:36:40.0
Andrew Bone: It all depends on how many scholarships you have on the team. With the loss of a few Alabama players this year it opens up more scholarships.
2007-09-05 11:38:19.0
Andrew Bone: I would think Alabama would like to sign one or two more. Of course Julio Jones and maybe Chris Tolliver.
2007-09-05 11:38:24.0
BamaFever: How hard are we on Dontavius Jackson after breaking his wrist Friday night?
2007-09-05 11:39:10.0
Andrew Bone: Alabama is still recruiting Jackson hard. He had over 220 yards in the first half before breaking his wrist. I think the staff would take a commitment from him.
2007-09-05 11:39:11.0
ray_keith: Where would you rank us right now?
2007-09-05 11:39:14.0
jharrison24: How Many more Wideouts are we looking at trying to get
2007-09-05 11:40:40.0
Andrew Bone: Right now I would say we are right around the top ten. A few schools ranked ahead have put together some unbelieable classes like Ohio State and Notre Dame. In the end Alabama will be right up there with them.
2007-09-05 11:40:44.0
jharrison24: Are we still in the running for TJ Bryant the cb From Flordia
2007-09-05 11:41:06.0
Andrew Bone: Yes, I think Alabama is among the top three schools for Bryant right now.
2007-09-05 11:41:09.0
AlanTIde: what is the greatest need in this class and how are we filling these needs? IE WR, LB, DL etc
2007-09-05 11:41:46.0
Andrew Bone: THe main focus is the defensive line, linebacker and receiver.
2007-09-05 11:42:51.0
ESE David Wasson: NWBama ... haha. I was talking about the furniture and set lighting. Cecil might own some leather shoes ...
2007-09-05 11:42:53.0
Andrew Bone: Alabama is filling those needs especially on the DL and WR. Still a little work to be done with linebackes but Courtney Upshaw will likely be used as a "jack" position player. If Alabama can sign WIlliam Green he could move back to linebacker as well.
2007-09-05 11:43:16.0
ESE David Wasson: Andrew has about 15 more minutes, everyone. Keep 'em coming!
2007-09-05 11:43:49.0
sbullington: Any word on 2 kids out of Texas that are currently comiited elsewhere, I believe one is a Wr the other a DL or LB? Square is suppose to be helping recruit these kids.
2007-09-05 11:45:26.0
Andrew Bone: If I had to guess it would be Alfred Dupree and Darryl Stonum. Dupree is a strongside linebacker committed to Ok State and Stonum committed to Michigan. Both were strongly considering Alabama before they made their decisions.
2007-09-05 11:45:28.0
sbullington: Sorry if asked earlier, how do we stand with the Harris kid?
2007-09-05 11:45:59.0
Andrew Bone: I think Alabama is on the outside with Harris. Auburn is probably the front-runner.
2007-09-05 11:46:01.0
jharrison24: How are we doing with Arthur Brown
2007-09-05 11:46:32.0
Andrew Bone: Brown has not narrowed down his list since the summer. When he does I believe Alabama will make the final cut and will receive an official visit.
2007-09-05 11:47:18.0
Scoooby: With guys like Earl Bennett escaping our state, how reliable do you think the star-ranking system is? (i.e.- look at some of our former Bama 3* players such as Tyrone Prothro and DeMeco Ryans)
2007-09-05 11:49:32.0
Andrew Bone: Every year there is going to be some hit and miss type players. Some aren't even going to be known about until they get to college. We try to fully evaluate as many prospects as we can.
2007-09-05 11:49:33.0
walla012: are there any notable committed players that we are still recruiting and that are still looking at us
2007-09-05 11:50:40.0
Andrew Bone: Ken Davis is committed to Ole Miss and plans to officially visit Alabama. Toby Jackson, a defensive end from Georgia, is committed to UGA. i think Alabama has the best shot to land him.
2007-09-05 11:50:44.0
AlanTIde: I know this is looking way down the road, but are there any early indications on the 2009 class? I know that Sept 1st was when we could make official offers for 2009. McCarren, Nico, etc
2007-09-05 11:50:58.0
ESE David Wasson: In case anyone missed part of the chat, we will put up the transcript in "Staff Chatter" later in the day.
2007-09-05 11:51:34.0
Andrew Bone: The 2009 class is going to be special. You are going to start hearing names like AJ McCarron, Nico Johnson, Tana Patrick, Dre Kirkpatrick and Alvin Hines on a regular basis.
2007-09-05 11:52:15.0
AlanTIde: and Bryce Brown? eheh
2007-09-05 11:52:32.0
Andrew Bone: If Arthur comes to Alabama....
2007-09-05 11:53:39.0
ESE David Wasson: Just a couple minutes remaining with Andrew Bone this week ...
2007-09-05 11:54:34.0
Andrew Bone: This has been great and I look forward to it every week.
2007-09-05 11:54:55.0
walla012: with the class filling up and so many offers left out there, how does that work, do they just back the kid or let him know he better come on or there wont be any room left
2007-09-05 11:55:56.0
Andrew Bone: With some recruits they let them know if they need to go ahead and commit, There are others like Julio Jones, T.J. Bryant, Arthur Brown who are told they can commit any time they want.
2007-09-05 11:56:56.0
sbullington: My understanding is that you are going to see more kids go the Schreiber route to make room for all these kids. Especially 3rd year players who are not in the 2 deep and do not contribute to special teams. They are going to be asked to leave or however that is done. Your thoughts?
2007-09-05 11:57:03.0
ESE David Wasson: Andrew, you have earned that pass we talked about last week! Great chat, everyone. Be sure to join Tommy Deas in chat tomorrow, and Cecil Hurt in chat Friday!
2007-09-05 11:57:33.0
Andrew Bone: I really don't have any knowledge on that situation. I don't think they are asked to leave the team.
2007-09-05 11:57:44.0
Andrew Bone: Sounds great David!!!
2007-09-05 11:58:02.0
ESE David Wasson: That'll do it for today. Thanks everyone!
2007-09-05 11:58:03.0
Nashvilletider: This has been great thanks Andrew
2007-09-05 11:58:06.0
AlanTIde: well, I have just one more comment today. ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2007-09-05 11:58:08.0
AlanTIde: WOW!! Thanks Andrew
2007-09-05 11:58:11.0
Scoooby: thanks
2007-09-05 11:58:24.0
Andrew Bone: Thanks everyone again for your questions and see you next week. Roll Tide
2007-09-05 11:58:27.0
LadyinRed: Roll Tide ALL!!!
