I have at least attempted to learn enough of a country's language to get by if I spent any significant time there. Want to know why? Because the people who lived in that country accepted me a hell of a lot better and it showed them that I wanted to be a part.

I agree with Trey, I don't have a problem with having someone's first language avaialble for business over the phone, but you are talking about an entirely different thing.

I should take this opportunity to tell a funny story about something that happened to me a few years ago. First you have to go back a few years further to the movie 16 Candles. Remember the Asian ( ) dude and his line "WTF are robster craws"? OK - I was in Boston for a class and Bama was playing in the SEC Championship game. It was Stallings' final game (I think). Anyway we had a guy in from our offices in China. His accent was just like the guy from 16 Candles! I was there with a fellow Bama fan and we were all watching the game in the hotel bar. Long Duck Dong (16 Candles again) didn't understand all the fuss over a college football game so we "indoctrinated" him to all things great about ALABAMA football. By the time the team ran out of the tunnell onto the field he was jacked up and really pulling for the good guys. When he yelled (in a HEAVY Chinese accent) "Awoah Tyed". The bar burst out in laughter and he was served free beer the rest of the night. Before we left one of the waitresses went to a local store and bought the guy a BAMA sweatshirt. It was a great night - Roll Tide!

In those other countries, kids have to learn English in school. Most anyone in France or Japan or Germany also knows English because it's a required subject, actually.

I'm not trying to stink anything up here, I'm really not. But I think every kid in this country should have to learn a second language in school, because it's an incredibly valuable asset to have, and it's just as important as math or science. If you're looking for a job in most places, knowing a second language bolts you ahead of the competition.

I'm not trying to "give away the country." I just don't think that English is that big a deal, and I don't think it's "uniquely American." There's nothing wrong with being bilingual.

If I ever immigrate or visit another country on my own (not as part of a guided trip where translation is part of the deal)- I promise I will learn their language.

i disagree with the thinking that we need two languages here in the US ... france, japan, germany, etc are very different from the US ... we are the largest, most complex polygot nation in the world, and the language needs to be the first common thread we all have ... it may benefit an individual to be bilingual, but english is the country's language ... the use of spanish in everyday life certainly does not provide incentive to learn english, but it's a capitalistic country, and businesses have the right to use spanish for their customers if they wish ...

there's nothing anyone can do about it ...
