You bring up a great point! If the people in India or wherever want to do business with US companies they take the time to learn the language, by gum. Why can't people that come to LIVE in THIS country and do business with companies in THIS country, and take advantage of welfare and other services this country offers, at least learn enough of the English language to function in THIS society. There I feel better now.

It's called outsourcing bro....these corporations get cheaper wages in other countries to do the're dirty work. it's the same as the mexicans that come into this country for work. the only problem...it knocks a lot of americans out of their jobs and their way of life...

You completely missed the point. But that's OK.

I get the point and I agree. I'm tired of having to press 1 for English at some of these smaller businesses. The bigger companies can have 800 numbers, but they have different extensions for different languages, and those extensions are usually part of the phone number listed on the card. And they're distinguished by the country of the billing address. If they're going to come over and become citizens of the US, and take our jobs, or take the welfare that our tax dollars pay for; they need to learn english as it's the language of the US.

That's my humble opinion anyway.

Realize this. Most of the hispanics that have a need to call these places are great upstanding (legal) members of our communities and they do speak english, I have no problem with allowing them to hear menus in there native language. We place an unfair stereotype on these guys as being "wetbacks" etc.....

I don't really give a rat's ass. I'm not sure what the big deal is, really. It's not like it's "our" language, anyways. English is a language, just like French is a language, just like Spanish and Japanese and Chinese and Hindi are languages. Doesn't mean that the people who speak foreign languages are evil or anything, and I don't really have a problem with us being a bilingual or trilingual or quadrilingual country.

Why should we only have one language here?

If they speak English and are in an English speaking country and are calling a US company then why in the crap can't they speak English? American companies are being forced to bare the burden and expense of either training workers to speak Spanish or hire Spanish speaking workers to handle the calls of people, that if they learned the language, wouldn't need to call in the first place. This is not an indictment against immigration. There are many that are here legally and contributing to the system that so many are here taking advantage of so nobody should be grouping all Hispanics in together. It's a slippery slope when we start letting the camel get his nose under the tent (look it up).

Hey bud, I said the majority of the folks do speak English but I like the fact that they can do business in their own language if they choose. And they are not making the US companies "bare the burden", it's the US companies choice to offer that option and by offering it they make more money. In the end it's all about the dollar.

Ummm - I wasn't actually looking to debate any of this. Just making a statement in reference to the post. Your last sentence is something I absolutely agree with, though. And that doesn't mean I disagree with everything else. Wink

P.S. Trey - what is up with the Mayan thing?

The Mayan calendar ends in 2012, which means the world ends then. Right? Smiler

I watched a show on the History Channel the other day about that. I never really figured out how they came up with 2012. It had something to do with these 20 year cycles that pop up every so many hundreds of years.
