I know a lot of people aren't going to like this, but nothing is really going to change until all nations are trading under the same rules and regs.
Does minimum wage hinder business? Maybe. But so to child labor laws. I still don't want an 8 year old working 70 hours a week for twenty cents an hour. |

It is the ripple effect that I take issue with... Employers will now be forced to raise starting pay for other skilled, entry level positions, which raises the cost of products and services across the board, which raises the cost of living, which negates an increase to the minimum wage... Wages just as the economy tend to right themselves without government intervention... ------------------------------ Old? Hell, I have always been old. I have drank, smoked, danced, fought, bled, and loved in order to earn every wrinkle, scar, and gray hair that I have. You say "old" like it is a curse. A curse? I consider it to be an honor. |

I agree about the ripple effect. Happens pretty much everytime the gov. gets involved. But I really don't think anything will change until all countries we trade with are playing by the same rules. As far as the wage issue working itself out, I don't think I agree with that. There's a reason child labor laws and limits on hours were instituted in the first place. It's also the same reason businesses move jobs overseas. In many instances, it seems like, if the business can be a slave driver, the business will be a slave driver. Even if minimum wage laws weren't in effect, jobs would still move overseas because the pay rate in many of those countries isn't enough to live on there, much less here. At some point, Americans would stop taking the job, forcing them to up pay or go overseas. My money is on overseas. |

They raise the minimum wage so people will be forced to hire illegals who work for a dollar and a poop sandwich. Anti-American globalism is what this game is about.
"The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any brand of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States." - Noah Webster |

That isn't the purpose of the wage in the first place... ------------------------------ Old? Hell, I have always been old. no, but the media talks of it like it is. I heard three reports this morning saying that the annual salary of a minimum wage worker for a family of four is well below the poverty line. So, are they trying to make me believe that one person is trying to support four on that salary? I am not that stupid. my preschool raised their rates two months ago in anticipation of this. I don't mind if it will keep consistency among my kid's teachers or preschool workers. but then again, I went to Alabama... in other words, college! |

So what is the purpose of a wage?

A starting wage for someone first entering the work force... Nothing more... It is expected that someone that actually works and shows up would not stay there for very long... ------------------------------ Old? Hell, I have always been old. I have said several times that minimum wage increases hurt everybody. Not only does companys have to raise prices to cover the wage increase for low skill workers, but the wage of skill workers get down graded.
Look at it this way. min wage is $5/hr. Johnny works in a factor sweeping floors 40hrs for min wage. Jack works a labor intensive job with high risk of injury making $10/hr working 40 hrs. Min wage increases to $7/hr. Johnny gets a $2/hr raise while Jack is getting the same wage as before. Suddenly Jacks job does not sound like a good decision. He could take a slight pay cut, and have an easier job, with almost no risk of injury. Solution, factory has to increase Jacks salary to make it more appealing to workers. The overall effect is the factor has more overhead which means it has to raise prices. If all companies do this, inflation goes up negating the min wage increase.
