Me too and I'm a republican who served active duty for 12 years. I'm very frustrated with the current state of affairs in Iraq.

What do you propose we do? Just pull out? That could be more dangerous than staying the course.
An unstable Iraq threatens the entire region. Interruption to the Middle Eastern oil flow could have severe economic consequences for us, not to mention the terrorist threat an anarchic Iraq could breed. Maybe we shouldn't have gone in, but it's too late to not go in now. I believe we have to stay until we finish the job. Pulling out now may cause the situation in that country to deteriorate to such a point that we are required to return under much worse circumstances than we face now. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- L'exclu... Stay until we finish what job? What is the job we are trying to finish in Iraq? I think that's the problem we have no vision for the outcome. These people hate each other and certainly hate us. At this point this isn't a war to be won. It's something different than anything we've ever been involved in. Close to Vietman where there was no clear objective.
I agree that the oil is a huge consideration. You think people are unhappy with the situation in Iraq . . . let them start paying $5 a gallon! Born to Kvetch! |

There was no clear gameplan other than "shock and awe" and after that the Bush Admin expected everyone to fall in line....well Iraq is in the middle of a civil war right now...everyone there wants us gone and the different sects of muslims will continue to fight each other...we can't stop that nor should we have to be refs for their fighting with each other. This war has gone on too long and you'd think after the Nov. elections the Republicans would wake up and see that most of the country doesn't want to be there anymore. Most of the hostilities over in Iraq right now is religious based violience(muslim vs mulslim) and we get caught in the middle. We need to go and let them decide how they want to live their life.

Iraq is stable now? Whew! Thanks. I was worried there, for a minute.

No, Iraq isn't stable now. If we were to pull out, then I'm sure that it would get much, much worse. I think that the world would see a horrible genocide, with the majority Shiites basically exterminating the Sunni minority. It wouldn't be pretty, that's for sure.
The problem with the region is that the majority of Muslims in that area are Sunnis, with the exception of Iraq. Part of the reason that the current conflict exists is that Shiite doctrine prescribes an individual member to give a 20% donation of their salary to the Shiite cleric of their choice. That's why some of those clerics have so much power: they have a LOT of money. More money means more influence and more of an ability to push their doctrine on those that don't agree with them. The Sunnis don't have the same type of requirement for giving. The U.S. right now is in a lose-lose situation: stay and have more servicemen and women die while attempting to keep a bad situation from getting worse, or leave and virtually assure mass killings of Sunnis while also assuring a massive "civil war" among competing Shiite subgroups. The whole thing, in a word, sucks. |

We won't be out of Iraq for at least another year and a half...and that will only be the enlisted military people. We'll still have about 50,000 paid military contractors there to fight W's dirty little war.

and there's no use arguing about why the war started ... the reasons for the war ... etc ... we're there ... we have to deal with it, somehow ... we get out, and who knows what power takes control ... lots of uncertainty ...

wow, do you ever sound brain-washed! Iraq is never going to be stable as long as we are there! meanwhile, our brave American soldiers are being killed at a higher rate now than ever since the war began. It's not going to get better. Our young men and women are true heroes, and it saddens me to no end to see them getting killed for a President who has no regard for anything but his own ego and his own political agenda. Why is he prolonging the inevitable end to this? In 2008, we will have a Democratic President, and Democratic majority in the house and America will withdraw from Iraq, and the world will be a much safer place because of it. I don't even want to get started with why we were in Iraq in the first place, but think about this. We were attacked by terrorists, who were known to be from AFGHANISTAN. There are several countries that we KNOW are enriching uranium as we speak! There are several countries in this world ruled by tyrannical murderous dictators! So, why Iraq??? Really? Could it be because an Iraq led by Saddam Hussein continues to threaten the oil in Saudi Arabia. Oil that President Bush is getting richer than richie as we continue to pay $3/gallon. While we have the technology to run cars off American corn crops (believe me, if Brazil can run 100% of cars off Brazilian sugar cane, we can too), with zero damage to our environment. Let me ask you this, hypothetically; If China thought that they didn't want us to have WMD's so they sent their army over here to search and destroy all of our testing, and enrichment facilities while simultaneously overthrowing our government and installing their own form of government, would you, me, and the rest of us not fight to the death to stop that from happening. And what if China said, okay, we can't win this war, because these American's won't stop fighting us. I hate to say it, but I think it's WRONG that we are over there, and it's time that we GET OUT! OPEN YOUR EYES ALABAMA!!! PLEASE, FOR THE SAKE OF MY CHILDREN! Think about WHY you are a Republican, because your parents were (so were mine)? because you don't believe in abortion (neither do I, but what has Bush done to stop it?)? because you love your gun rights (so do I, I love hunting, but to my knowledge no democratic government has taken away my right to bear arms)? because you are EXTREMELY RICH (okay, maybe you have a good reason to be a Republican, LOL)? But for the rest of us working class Americans look in the mirror. We can do better! I hope everybody reads this. I have my beliefs and I know they aren't going to be popular in Alabama, but it's not because Alabama is made up of extremely rich people, it's because there are a lot of conservative people in Alabama. Well, all I can say is, there is NOTHING wrong with conservative. But this president is not Conserving ANYTHING. Not the environment, not fuel, and most importantly not human life. Did you know more American soldiers have died in combat in Iraq since 9/11 than how many people died in the twin towers attack? THAT IS SAD! __________________________________________________________ This is Alabama Football. This is Dixie's football pride. We're gonna beat the hell out of you. We are the CRIMSON TIDE! Brazil runs all of its cars off of sugar cane? Do you have a link to that? I'd like to read about that. __________________________________ Captain Insano is SERIOUS. Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy. |

I'm not saying that they're not. All I'm asking for is a link so that I can read about it. I figured that if you highly intelligent folks already knew about it, you would easily be able to point me in the right direction. |
