Would you die to protect your child?
It seems that refusal to sacrifice and willingness to die are the most Christian motives. "Back off, man. I'm a scientist." |

I don't have kids yet, but I'd like to think I'd give my life for my kids. However, if I thought God was telling me to kill my kid, I'd seek psychiatric help.
God has told a lot of people to kill. Today, most of those people are in prison or have been executed. _______________________________ Women are like wolves. If you want one you must trap it. If I was 100% certain that it was God commanding it and I hadn't lost my mind, then yes I would. Of course, God also didn't let Abraham follow through with it. I don't think that scenario occurs today though.

You know, the more I think about it, I'm not sure I would be strong enough to sacrifice something like that. Like I said, God doesn't seem to communicate much that way any more and I don't think he would make the same request now. So it's all a moot point, realistically.

I brought this up because of the deaths of young children and its usually the parent. I just don't understand that act. I don't care if God commanded me, I would say no. I would give my life for my children.

But if you'd lost your mind, how would you know? I'd think it would be a sign that you hadn't lost your mind if you indeed had the wherewithall to think you had lost your mind... I'm dizzy. |

Yeah, I know, it makes me dizzy too. I don't think God would command any one to do that now. If I thought I heard God telling me that know, I would assume I was out of my mind. |

circular logic tends to deliver that effect... Uhhhh - I mean - me too! But then your ultimate devotion is to your children and not to God, which is wrong. Like I've said, I don't think God would command any one to do it now. And in Abraham's story, Issac didn't die. God provided a substitute. |

That was an isolated case of God testing Abraham's faith. Thankfully we live under the New Testament, where God did his speaking through the Bible. On to the 2nd part of the question - Yes, I would die for my children. In your original post you seem to have questioned a Christian's "willingness" to die. It not so much a willingness to die as it is a lack of fear of death. ***************************************************************************************************** There'll be two dates on your tombstone. Absolutely. But isn't the argument against abortion is that God commands us to protect the unborn/unprotected ie protect the children. "Back off, man. I'm a scientist." |

My arguement is that we don't have the authority take a life unless God has given us that authority. There are Biblical evidences/examples for things like war or capitol punishment in the penal code, but nothing for killing an innocent person our aborting a baby. And in Abraham's example, God basically authorized Abraham to take Issac's life by commanding him to do so. |

But now your getting into a grey area here because Abraham didn't know that Isacc would be spaired. He just believed he was the first man to talk to god and "go offer your son as a burnt sacrifice" is what god had to say to him. Also how bout the old testament story in Judges 11:30-39 where Jephthah sacrifices his daughter to god??? No one remembers or mentions this because most christians don't read the old testament but he killed/sacrificed his daughter because god let him win a battle. I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires. Susan B. Anthony |
