I've got both systems and I don't think you can really go wrong either way. I will say this though....if you were to compare the two just from a stand-alone view, I do think the PS3 would win b/c of the "bells and whistles" integrated in with the PS3.

The PS3 features:
* an integrated wi-fi antenna for wireless networking access (although it can connect via ethernet cable too)

* a BluRay player that is constantly updated by Sony (where the updates can simply be downloaded from the internet via your PS3 as long as it's connected to a network). For instance, they added DTS-HD audio decoding capabilities in one of the updates a few months ago.

* free online gaming (although not as mature as Xbox Live yet)

* the same media sharing capabilities as the 360 (I can even play more movie formats on my PS3 than my 360)

* an internet browser, although it's not as good as browsers on most computers

* HDMI output in 1080p (and the other HD resolutions of course)

* a really cool feature is how it can "sync up" with your PSP which adds a totally new list of features that Sony is just now tapping into

* ability to download HD movies and games (you do have to pay extra for those though)

* pretty much the same games as the 360 other than "Halo", "Gears of War", "Ninja Gaiden 2", and a few others, but most, if not all, of the sports games are all included on the PS3 now. But the PS3 has a few exclusives of its own too though such as Metal Gear Solid 4, etc.

* you can install your own linux operating system on the PS3

The Xbox 360 features:
* a vast library of games

* outstanding media sharing capabilities (although, like I mentioned above I can't play a few of my media formats on the 360 that I can on the PS3)

* very good online gaming, but they've had Xbox Live going good now since their first-gen Xbox....you do have to pay ~$60/year to get this capability though

* cheaper than the PS3 by about $100-$200 depending on what version of the 360 you buy

* Netflix was just recently added (or is about to be in the latest update) that allows for streaming of some of your movies through your Netflix account. I think this is a really cool feature, but I'm not a Netflix account owner myself...but I definitely can see the good in this feature.

* wired networking capabilities (again, you have to buy an add-on for wireless access capabilities)

* 1080p (and other HD resolutions) HDMI output on the newer systems. The first versions of the 360 didn't have this, so if you buy off of eBay or some place similar make sure it has the integrated HDMI output.

Unfortunately with the 360, you have to buy add-ons to get wireless networking capabilities and the 360 does not have an integrated BluRay player (although you can buy an HD-DVD add-on for cheap now that the HD-DVD format is practically obsolete now). Of course, if you end up buying a stand-alone BluRay player along with a store-bought 360, you end up paying about the same and maybe even a little more for the combination as compared to the price of a PS3.

Personally, I still play games on both, but I did buy a 360 when they first came out and yes....I had the "Red Ring Of Death" and had to get a new one and A LOT of people had problems with that, but Microsoft has taken great strides in fixing that problem and the newer systems in the stores now are less likely to have that problem due to hardware design changes made in the new 360's. Conversely, the PS3 has never had such a widespread issue like this that I'm aware of.

If you HAD to buy a system and couldn't get both, I'd recommend the PS3, but like I said....you can't really go wrong with either based primarily on gaming purposes alone. Again, from a stand-alone console view....I'd go with the PS3 b/c of the BluRay player and integrated wireless antenna.

Feel free to PM me or add to this post with any other questions/concerns you may have.

the latest xbox 360 integrates orb which means i can access whatever i have in any folder i designate on my pc or laptop..from anywhere as long as i have a connection.

ie i have 70 movies on my pc in a folder and can watch those with the xbox...

orb as lets me access those with my iphone.

also if i buy a tv tuner card i can watch comcast cable tv through orb with my iphone...anywhere...with the xbox too i think.

Yesterday XBox Live launched its update with Netflix. If you use Netflix at all, you MUST go XBox. You'll be able to "watch instantly" over 10,000 movies & TV shows. Unlimited viewing...

With regard to hardware failures, XBox offers a 3-year warranty. No need for an extended warranty from Best Buy, etc. And as other have noted, the hardware problems have been corrected anyway.

XBox Live is $50 a year, but it's a "must have" service.

The only area in which XBox falls short vis-a-vis PS3 is the lack of Blu-Ray support; but I'll take Netflix over Blu-Ray any day.

Yeah...the blu-ray was the only thing holding me back from buying my Xbox last year. But the way I look at it...I'm buying this for a gaming platform. Not for a DVD player or to run another OS like Linux. The PS3 seems to be a lot tougher for developers to write games for...some of the new titles coming out according to GameSpot don't look as good on the PS3 as they do on the Xbox. Incidentally, if the blu-ray thing is still important to you...Toshiba is developing a blu-ray player add-on for the Xbox (like they tried with HD-DVD) and it will cost around $150. Will be out sometime next year.

the way i understand it and i may be wrong is that even though they added netflix to the xbox you can't just connect from your xbox. you still have to manually start the movie from your pc and then watch it with your xbox which seems obsolete to me. if you have a pc you already have access to netflix and have always able to network your pc to your tv if you have the right kind of tv. i read somewhere that you can't just browse and connect to a netflix movie from your xbox without having to start the streme from your computer. anyone know the benefit of going through your xbox other than just being one less connection and/or just a wireless middle man?

According to the details of the update (I have not downloaded the update yet), you will stream directly from the 360 much like you do with some of their free Xbox Live stuff (movie trailers, etc.). You will not have to go through your CPU. What I'm not sure of is if the movies you stream via Netflix will be in true HD resolutions. I had heard that they would NOT stream in HD, but I cannot verify that as of yet and I still want to assume that Microsoft wouldn't integrate this in unless it were able to stream HD resolutions.

UPDATE: It appears there will be HD streaming, but not from their entire HD collection. There will be about 300 movies initially available for streaming, but more are expected to be made available in the future.

I like the concepts the Wii brings to the proverbial table, but this is clearly a "family-oriented" system and that may be good for a lot of folks, but for gamers that are into the serious titles, this isn't the system for them. The graphics processor isn't in the same league as the PS3/360, so yeah...the better looking games are gonna be on the other systems. Having said that....I LOOOVE playing tennis on the Wii...that's about it though. Smiler

I have both. I enjoy the xbox 360 more because it has more games and it has a much better on-line environment.

What I do is evaluate a game for it's on-line potential and if a game is common to both, I look at the game sites to see which platform they think the game is better on.
