There is pride in the preseason #5 SEC team absolutely destroying the ACC's best team in front of the entire nation. I agree, I loved seeing UT flame out at the Rose Bowl and hope for Auburn to implode every time they play.
There is some pride in the SEC beating up on these other BCS conferences every year in bowl games just to put an exclamation point that the SEC is head and shoulders better than anybody else. |

I'm with you, BamaRabbi. I was pulling for UCLA all the way. I can't pull for Tenn. or Auburn and although I really don't have anything against Florida...I just can't pull for Teebow.

I support other sec teams when it has the potential to make Bama look better in the polls or to move us in a position to play for the sec championship game, I like for teams to be undefeated when we play them, but i also have to say that the only time i will ever pull for Aubarn or the Vols is when it can benefit Alabama.
Auburn fans are like slinkys... not really good for anything but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs. |

The first time I heard the SEC chant specifically was when Florida won the National Championship in 2006. Seems like the SEC pride has been progressing from there.

I think it all started when Auburn went 13-0 and didn't get a chance to play USC. I hate Auburn as much as the next guy but that doesn't mean they deseved the right moreso than OU. From there everyone in the SEC felt they were disrespected by the polls becuase the polls didn't respect Auburn's feat of going through the SEC undefeated. I hate to pump Auburn but its true.

I'll cheer for all the sec teams except for auburn. They are direct competition for in state recruits and we can't both be good with our states talent level. One of us has to be down for the other to be consistently good.

I've been watching the game tonight and most of the weekend and I've come to this conclusion.
I am a fan of Alabama. Given that, I can not in my heart pull for anyone that we play, ie the viles tonight. I remember the list that has gone around again and again stating "What it Means to be an Alabama Fan". This line still stands out: It is walking into another team's stadium and having those fans hate you because you are from Alabama. O by the way, these are three other lines; It is the pride you take in being every team's rival. It is pulling for any team that is playing Auburn. It is pulling for any team that is playing Tennessee. I've been to every stadium in the SEC and I've seen the good and the bad and the ugly. I've had beer thrown at me, cursed and had people who want to fight me because I'm an Alabama fan. Now there is what appears to be a league wide let's jump behind the SEC against everyone. I ask you how many Viles fans or Tiggers, both kinds, or Gaytors fans were pulling for Alabama on Saturday night? I know my friends how, God bless 'em, pull for other schools were pulling for Clemson. I realize that I may see different from other people but I want Alabama to get back to the point where we win because it's meant to be. I want us to own teams again. I want the fear that people had when they played Alabama. The only record that I care about is what Alabama finishes with, not how the SEC does outside of the conference. I could care less whether Kentucky beats Polytech School of the South or LSU beats Ohio State. Do we win, that's what I care about. I do not like nor will I EVER cheer for anyone in the SEC other than Alabama. I could care less about any other team because, whether this year or next or 2010, we will return to dominance, not just in the SEC but the NCAA. When it's all said and done, we're Alabama and they're not!!!! Michael Knight, a lone crusader in a dangerous world. The world... of the Knight Rider. |

Well, Ohio State has played in the last two NC games. Doesn't seem to have hurt them. "Honesty is the best policy, but insanity is a better defense." |

Then they should have been hating preseason polls which had Auburn in the mid teens and USC(which blanked Auburn the year before, and didn't play in the BCS championship yet) and OU were either at the top or near the top all season. I pull for most SEC teams, but not for Auburn or Tennessee. My two favorite teams are Alabama and whoever is playing Auburn.

It'd be interesting to know the average age of the previous posters. Pride in the SEC was going strong during Coach Bryant's era. Anyone who has ever heard Coach Stallings speak knows how he feels about pulling for your conference. The chant recently heard at bowl games may be a recent addition, but pride in this conference has been around at least the 55 years I've been following Bama. It doesn't mean you have to love every team (notably the barn and viles), but it does make your team and conference look good when we (the conference teams) are whipping all others. RTR!!!

Where did all this SEC Pride start?
Well, there was this football coach at Alabama in the 60's and 70's who thought it was important. I grow weary of making this argument, but it simply is better for Alabama if SEC teams win their out of conference games. It is the reason that Alabama makes more money. It is the reason that Alabama is on TV more. It is the reason that Alabama has better bowl choices. It is the reason that Alabama can have a chance to play for a national championship over a team with a similar record in the Big 12 or Pac 10. It is a reason that we can attract better athletes who want to play in the premier conference. And I am particularly sick of the thought that the only reason a recruit would pick Alabama over Florida or Tennesseee or Auburn is because those programs were losing and we were winning. I actually think more of Alabama than that. I think that Alabama has enough tradition and stature that we the only way that we can win a recruiting battle is if the other guys are down. That's second-class thinking. |

Actually it has long been a source of pride to a lot of people.
If you beat up on a conference full of panzies and nobodies...guess what will happen to you in the bowl games-you lose. When you play tough opponents, you have a better chance of winning and thus a greater claim to something rather than pounding losers. Some of you are completely senseless when it comes to the greater realm of strategic thought about football and the cultural meaning. RTR "The same things win that always won. And we just have a different bunch of excuses if we lose."--Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant |

I don't see why this is so hard to understand! SEC winning over non-conference teams gives the conference as a whole respect. When you go undefeated in the SEC, you deserve to be in the some people talk about the SEC champ getting and automatic bid to the NC game. Well...i think thats true as well but what would give anyone that right to feel that way if the SEC didn't walk the walk? I was pulling for TN over UCLA the other night but I didn't lose any sleep when they lost. If TN, LSU, FL, AU, and GA were crap what would it do to our strenght of schedule? I don't give a da** about Ohio State and USC...meaning I don't want to be un-derserving champions. Playing in tough games everyweek prepares us for the Championship game. Just ask Ohio State!! I'd also rather beat a 7-0 TN instead of an 3-4 TN. If nothing else it makes the game more exciting when we play them which should be reason enough! I boast about our conference and I'll continue to boast about our conference cause when we win out, I can honestly say we are the best of the best!!! I'm proud to say I think at least 3 of our SEC teams could have beat the sh** out of Ohio State last year! |
