I think the "powers that be" knew at the time of Shula's hiring that Bama would suffer greatly under the sanctions, and that the coach would have to be a mere placeholder, until we were in a position to attract a better coach. Fran realized how bad it was going to get, and that's why he left. Bama needed to hire someone who would have maximum goodwill from the fanbase, and who would "take one for the team." Shula fit the bill, and Croom did not. No one can seriously dispute that Saban is a better coach than Croom or Shula, who can return the program to the prominence and success that we have traditionally enjoyed. Had we hired Croom, we would be stuck with him, or face tremendous criticism from the media if we got rid of him before giving him several years of mediocrity even after the effects of sanctions passed. Who needs that bad press, and the potential impact on recruiting? Croom has shown that he is more than willing to throw around the race card, just because he was not hired here. How bad would he be if we had hired, then fired him? I don't know if Shula was aware of the play that the "powers" were making, but he did not come out of it too bad, and he has not complained about it.

If Nick Saban wasn't coaching, we'd have Mike Shula. There's nothing wrong with him except for everything that people say about him. As far as Sylvester Croom goes, I support, respect, and pull for him, but I am glad he isn't the coach here.

Don't get me wrong. If you interview Shula and Croom both, only a moron would pick Shula. Croom understands how to win, but he cannot be the coach of Alabama. Alabama and Croom do not fit. He would have lasted longer than Iron Mike, but he would have gotten fired eventually. Just about every coach we tried to hire would (and I also mean Rich Rod, 4 years to be fired).

Let me ask. Do you think Coach Saban will get fired? Does anyone see him as a coach who will end up getting fired? I don't. I think people are moreso worried about him leaving us, than us firing him.

The fact is that every coach we've had since the Bear, we've seen as a guy we would fire at the drop of a hat from the day he came in here.

I don't think that anyone thought that with this staff. It's about time.

They've already had their chance and the Okies took their place (deservedly so IMO). It's the only chance they'll have for a long....long....long time.

The past doesn't mean a thing and if I had to choose between Saban and Croom, I'm picking Saban 101% of the time, so why even bother with the debate?

Croom was a coach when my neighbor played on the 78 NC team. He is now a successful businessman in the southeast and he tailgates with a lot of the x players, i am not going to give up anymore than we went to the LSU game with he and his wife and several x bama fans came back to their tent after the game. The subject went to Croom and they said Dubose was a better coach that Croom. Croom was a great guy and loved Bryant but he didnt have the tools to coach at Bama it would eat him up and we would be in a bigger mess. Dont shoot the messenger. But in 2 years with Nutt in Mississippi. Croom wont get all the blue chippers out of MS and both teams will be at the bottom of the SEC. We needed a leader and someone smart enough to lead the school Bama was and is just too powerful for Sly to handle and one gentleman noted in a previous post. He would be one of Paul jr boys . Did you read the nice letter Jr sent to him after we lost to them this year. I dont know about you but I am sick of playing in the weed eater bowl. I just read saban;s book How good do you want to be? Shows you why he is where he is. What books has Croom published. I dont know of any . Please let me know if he has. I think he is a just exactly where he needs to be and I wish him good health and a miserable time when he plays us next year.

Very well stated. I too know several old players who have stated the same things. I've always loved and admired Sly. I would have been behind him 100% had we hired him. But we didn't!!!!

Were Sly lost me, was when we didn't hire him. He used the race card, allowed people like Jesse Jackson to run his mouth. Sly could have shut all that down, but he chose not to.

Then he bashes Alabama on the recruiting trail. He makes statements about Jimmy Johns, statements about Bama always getting the calls.

I know several people in the Ath Dept who have said that Sly has burnt every bridge in T-Town with his mouth.

Therefore, I say piss on Sly. My school comes first over any former player. I pulled for Miss State today because they are in the SEC. That is the only reason.

Piss on you, Dumb-As*!

Croom is a real man....not some jerk on a forum....who has 0 decency, and who is a pathetic Alabama SYCOPHANT idiot!

Paul Bryant Jr. displayed real Sportsmanship and friendship sending a congrat note to Coach Croom, and is....as I am....delighted to see a true Alabama great succeed! Mississippi State just finished 8 and 5 with a good bowl win over CFU! Maybe one day Bama can get 8 wins!

Class-less morons like Mayes is why Alabama is hated by many fans! Easy to see why!
