Actually, I had no ill will when I called you "dude"...it was actually a friendly gesture...but now that I think of it, maybe "punk" would be more fitting. "Move!...You're gonna kill the grass!" defensive coordinator Kevin Steele yelling at defenders during Spring Practice |

Ummmm.....no, punk dude, you will not. Meyer would have been the better choice. Croom looks good right now and I am proud of him, but that is the limit of it. RTR "The same things win that always won. And we just have a different bunch of excuses if we lose."--Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant |

Yep....you are proving me correct. You are a punk aren't you? BTW...Urban did a great job coaching Ron Zooks players to the National Title, and the Florida Gators name has brought him some really nice talent...enough to win another title. I haven't said that Urban is a bad coach, but trust me, he wouldn't have done any better at MSU than what Croom has, and he wouldn't have done any better at Alabama than what Shula did. Programs on probation need time to heal before ANYONE can succeed. Oklahoma is a prime example. LMAO, I do not know. Just thought it would be kind of funny.
Really, I think Croom has done a fantastic job this year. RTR "The same things win that always won. And we just have a different bunch of excuses if we lose."--Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant |

Croom was a coach when my neighbor played on the 78 NC team. He is now a successful businessman in the southeast and he tailgates with a lot of the x players, i am not going to give up anymore than we went to the LSU game with he and his wife and several x bama players for the 77 -79 team came back to their tent after the game. The subject went to Croom and they said Dubose was a better coach that Croom. Croom was a great guy and loved Bryant but he didnt have the tools to coach at Bama it would eat him up and we would be in a bigger mess. Dont shoot the messenger. But in 2 years with Nutt in Mississippi. Croom wont get all the blue chippers out of MS and both teams will be at the bottom of the SEC. We needed a leader and someone smart enough to lead the school Bama was and is just too powerful for Sly to handle and one gentleman noted in a previous post. He would be one of Paul jr boys . Did you read the nice letter Jr sent to him after we lost to them this year. I dont know about you but I am sick of playing in the weed eater bowl. I just read saban;s book How good do you want to be? Shows you why he is where he is. What books has Croom published. I dont know of any . Please let me know if he has. I think he is a just exactly where he needs to be and I wish him good health and a miserable time when he plays us next year.

I am one who doesn't believe Croom should have be hired. I think we will be much better off in the 2009 - 2015 period than we would have been under Croom. It is good to see him do well this year but don't make any bets that next year will be as good or better.

Looking back I don't think Croom or Shula should have been hired. Bama is not a school for on the job training. If we can pay 4M now, we could have paid 4M then and hired a coach with head coaching experience with a proven record instead of choosing between two coordinators. We messed up the whole process by settling. We should have emptied the wallet, like we did with Saban, and hired who we wanted, not who we could get. We settled for average. We should never settle for average.

Very well stated. I too know several old players who have stated the same things. I've always loved and admired Sly. I would have been behind him 100% had we hired him. But we didn't!!!! Were Sly lost me, was when we didn't hire him. He used the race card, allowed people like Jesse Jackson to run his mouth. Sly could have shut all that down, but he chose not to. Then he bashes Alabama on the recruiting trail. He makes statements about Jimmy Johns, statements about Bama always getting the calls. I know several people in the Ath Dept who have said that Sly has burnt every bridge in T-Town with his mouth. Therefore, I say piss on Sly. My school comes first over any former player. I pulled for Miss State today because they are in the SEC. That is the only reason. |

Hindsight and second guessing being what it is on this forum, everyone has been doing their version of what if. Let me throw out a few thoughts, opinions, and questions myself.
If Croom has been selected as head coach, there probably would have been an initial division in the fan base. As the third coach in less than 6 months, Alabama needed someone to rally around and stop the trauma the program was undergoing. The University of Alabama needed a caretaker coach to hold it together through probation. At that point in time, could Sylvester Croom have united the fan base like Mike Shula did! I am sorry, but a significant portion of the fan base in 2003 would have not been comfortable with Sylvester Croom as Head Coach like they were comfortable with Mike Shula. The coach hired in 2003 has never going to be given free reign to reinvent the program...call it the aftermath of Coach Fran and Coach Price, so you next have to consider the limited expectations. Would Coach Croom have been able to guide Alabama through the probation years with the same or slightly better record as Coach Shula? Remember, this year at MSU was a hot seat year for Croom...he was not an overnight success with MSU. If this year had been another losing season, we would probably be discussing his firing! So, how do you think the fan base or the media would have reacted to two or three losing seasons at Alabama under Sylvester Croom. Remember, he would have recruited under the same sanctions Shula was under, and have had the same problems in talent and depth during those years. Finally, what would have been the outcry if/when Alabama had to fire him after 4 years. Notre Dame has survived their firing of Tyrone Willingham, solely on the good will of the national media. Put Alabama in that situation, and we would be permanently crucified! We can cuss and discuss whether Croom should have been chosen our head coach in 2003. I do not think the conditions he would have had to work under would have allowed him be successful at Alabama. I think he probably would have ended up like Mike Shula--fired! I don't think many coaches could have survived those years. I do think the conditons at MSU finally worked in his favor, at least for this year. Next year could be a different story and only time will tell. "What goes around, comes around." "What goes around, comes around." |

Yep...a modern day Bear Bryant would have been fired after those four years because the Tide fanbase and alumni would not have had to patience with anyone, to include Coach Saban. That was evident this year, on this very forum, when Coach Saban lost four in a row. Coach Croom would have been fine with a better fanbase, and that very fanbase better begin to think a little more realistically concerning the immediate future. Coach Saban won't turn around the program overnight either...it will take some time; a "process" that is often quoted on this site by those with true insight.
