U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions reports our troops will be able to watch the Iron Bowl live on the Armed Forces Network. Responding to the flood of requests he's gotten, he asked the Pentagon to set up a live broadcast of the game and the request has been granted.
Wooohooo! Gotta email my hubby overseas and let him know!

That's really awesome! You know they'll be homesick around Thanksgiving, this should give them something to take their minds off things. Way to go Senator Sessions!

Not sure what the big deal is, this is nothing new. I have been stationed overseas most of my career and AFN (Armed Forces Network) always carries the CBS game, ESPN games, and the ABC games. AFN has around 10 channels now. The only way a game would not be televised is if it's on Raycom or PPV. Seems to me like a politician is getting credit for something that would have happened anyway.

My husband said he has not been able to get all games where he is, depends on what they have set up. He's not exactly on land, either, if that makes any difference.
That, and could be 1 TV being hogged for a different game. I just know he was excited to call me one day 'cos he was going to get to see one of the games Smiler

Agreed...I watched the Iron Bowl live from both Japan and Iceland by way of AFN. This definately sounds like a politician getting undeserved credit.

I have a much different perspective.

I spent 1983-1990 stationed in Europe, and didn't get a lot of chances to either see Alabama play on TV, or hear them play on radio, because they didn't get selected....they didn't have a choice of AFN channels then. During Desert Storm & Desert Storm thngs improved and we got to see and hear quite a few Alabama games...I got to listen to Alabama lose to Louisville in the Fiesta Bowl, while wearing my Chem-Warfare suit..,.Saddam didn't stop things because of bowl games. A couple of years later, I was flying a mission over the Mediterranean Sea when Alabama beat Florida to win the SEC title in 1992 and couldn't find any info on the game until after we landed...I talked to about a dozen or so US bases over the plane's HF radio, but with no luck.

So excuse me if someone making an effort to make sure the Iron Bowl is shown, is still a big deal in my eyes. When you are thousands of miles from home, you appreciate the chances to connect with family and fiends, and the opportunity to feel like you are not that far away...as simple as it sounds, getting a chance to hear/see Alabama play football did it for me.

Key statement.

"I spent 1983-1990....."

Football games are readily available on AFN nowadays and Sessions didn't do a thing to help it.

Without reference to the politics of this discussion and for reasons I won't detail here, I share your appeciation for efforts to connect the troops with Bama and home. I also admire and value your service to our country.

1972 thru 1976 overseas...Being able to see or hear anything remotely USA was always welcomed!

This weekend's college football games on the Armed Forces Networks. I wonder how many politicians it took to make this NORMAL scheduling happen. Roll Eyes

Link

Fresno State @ San Jose State
West Virginia @ Louisville
Michigan @ Ohio State
North Carolina State @ North Carolina
Air Force @ TCU
Michigan State @ Penn State
Ole Miss @ LSU
Pittsburgh @ Cincinnati
Florida State @ Maryland
Texas Tech @ Oklahoma

I guess that pretty much covers all the televised games for the weekend. Bottom line, the Iron Bowl was going to be televised regardless of what Sessions did. He deserves ZERO credit.

In looking at the link you gave us, it looks like the games for 11/29 are all "TBD". Maybe Sessions helped to insure that the Iron Bowl would be one of those "TBD". Whatever the case be, you might want to consider letting it go man.
