I don't know about the #1 ranking .

we were ranked #1 in 1961 but didn't play SM for about 9 or so years in the late 50's to mid 60's

Another thing to remember is the scholly limitations that have shifted CFB to a level playing field. In Bear's days they signed twice as many players. I agree to say that ANY team we play can't beat us this year or any year is always a foolish endeavor. I'm a HUGE proponent that we shouldn't have a preseason ranking. I think if they waited till the 3rd week it would make a lot more sense & help teams that are really good, but ranked way too low to begin the year, or keep the right rankings for teams way too high & over hyped like I believe VT to be. Does that mean they're not a good or even great team that can beat Alabama? NO, but when you're talking about that elite group to start out the year: Florida, USC, Ohio St, Alabama, Texas, is Va Tech in that mix? are they a GOOD enough team? I don't think so. They were a team with a lot of problems last year. They defaulted into the ACC CG because they didn't face UNC last year & they backed their way in. Va Tech CAN win, but if Bama plays to their potential the Hokies won't have a chance.

But what do I know??
