The media attention he gets is warranted. He's likely the best college football player. Ever.
Think about that for a second. I know a lot of people that hate Tiger Woods simply because he's so good. People hated Jordan because he was so good. There are always going to be people who "hate" the best thing going because that's just who they are. The fact of the matter is that Tebow, like it or not, is probably the best college football player ever. And we're getting to watch him play. This isn't like some star player from the '20s, '30s, '40s, '50s, or even '60s that nobody got to see play. This is the real deal. I certainly don't hate the guy. He seems like a good guy and he's an excellent football player. I just hope that he's not good enough to beat us in the SECCG (assuming we win out). __________________________________ Captain Insano is SERIOUS. Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy. |

I don't know about "best ever". He's probably as accomplished as anyone. Barry Sanders was unreal in college though. He had to sit behind Thurman Thomas for a couple years though. I guess you could make an argument for Tebow and be able to back it up with some solid stats. It's telling that his best season was his sophomore season though. That was his Heisman year, when his stats were completely gaudy, but they also lost four or five games that year. He's had a hell of a lot of talent around him though. Florida has had some incredible defenses while he's been there. He's had an abundance of skill position players around him too. Is Tebow a great player? Yes. But, you could plug in twenty different QB's from the past 25 years with that Florida team and they could do just as well. |

I don't know. Maybe. The thing to me that sets Tebow apart is that, as a QB, he holds the SEC record for rushing touchdowns. That's insane to me. Now, to be fair, that is somewhat a product of the offense they run. But it's also partly due to his athletic ability. He has 77 passing TDs in his career to go along with 51 rushing TDs. Another rushing TD and he'll crack the top 15 all time in the NCAA. He won't sniff the top 15 in passing TDs unless he goes nuts his last four or five games (he'd need almost 20 more). But still...the numbers he's put up are crazy. __________________________________ Captain Insano is SERIOUS. Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy. |

He's a great player. It's always tough to label someone the best ever in a particular sport. Aside from Wayne Gretzky in hockey, most major sports have a few different guys that an argument could be made for considering them as the best ever. As far as college football goes, Tebow is definitely in the conversation. |

True...I mean, they called Gretzky "The Great One," so it's hard to quibble with that one! __________________________________ Captain Insano is SERIOUS. Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy. |

Let's face it. The media love him because he's religious and WHITE. There are TONS of religious Black players and the media could frickin' care less. Why? Becuae a human interest story at halftime about a black guy who is religious--who actually overcame adversity with his faith--is considered boring to the audientce college football broadcasts are aimed at > > middle-aged White men. (Ever heard Glenn Coffee's testimony? Bring tears to your eyes.) But a religious well-spoken camera-friendly White boy??? That's the ticket!!!

I"m not one for the witty little phrases that many on here love to use....but if there ever was a time to use the word "fail" then this post is it. ************************** Rom 10:9 I love open forums. Name one with the stats, hardware & national championships that Tebow has. It has nothing to do with the color of his skin. It has to do with the fact that he's a great football player who has a good backstory. __________________________________ Captain Insano is SERIOUS. Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy. |

What back story? He was home-schooled. Never interacted with the real world or dealt with real adversity. What has his faith overcome? Mom's beehive hairdo? Compare his faith to that of Glenn Coffee, who slept with a baseball bat to avoid abuse by his dad. Any story about that? Nope. But TIm goes to the Phillipines and cuts off foreskins on his Dad's dime and he's a hero.
I'm not talking about his ability as a player. He's a heck of a player. But that's not why he get's the love from the media. Tell me why his faith is such an issue that SI runs a story replacing the "T"s in his name with CROSSES??? There are a LOT of religious players in college football. But because most of them are black--even if they are great players--the media sees this as "cultural" and knows it does not appeal to the viewers like Tebow does. All I'm sayin'. OK, not all....Further, the unmitigated LOVE for Tebow clouds any objective discussion of him: In the Nat'l Championship lasy year when he was called for taunting: "That's the first thing he's ever done wrong." Really??? In the SEC Championship, he ripped off his helmet and yelled at a ref when a 3rd down call didn't go his way. Try THAT if you're a Bama player! BTW, the no-call allowed Florida to kick a field goal that would have been out of range if the call were made. Could have changed the game. But we don't mind that, do we? All I'm saying is that the guy catches a break--from the media and from officials--and that is unwarranted. ******************* "The solar eclipse is like a woman breastfeeding in a restaurant. I certainly think that it's easier to promote a well-spoken white player to the middle-class audience, but I don't really think that's the case here. (For the record, I DO think the media treat stories differently depending on race and class. If there's a murder of some young guy in Ensley, it's going to get a brief mention in the paper, but if it's a white woman in Hoover, it's going to be a lead story. There are plenty of examples of this, and there are multiples explanations, but I don't want to get sidetracked onto that any further.) In the case of Tebow, there are very few players who are as vocal about their faith AND who have the kind of overt family religious background. He was even born when his parents were working in the mission field, so it's too good a story to overlook. Show me a black athlete with that sort of high-profile story AND Tebow's athletic accomplishments, and I'll think you have a valid argument. If you can't do that, I think you're overreaching in this case. David |

All I am saying is that the coverage is over the top. And it is not based on his accomplishments on the field alone. I know there are no black players with his story. But that makes theirs a BETTER, not worse, story. How hard is it to cling to your faith when you are home-schooled, never face the world and live a life pre-determined by your parents? Sorry, I'll take the kid whose faith had to see him through tough times: hunger, drug addiction, abuse. Now THAT'S an inspiring story of faith OVERCOMING. But that story belongs to a black kid like Coffee. Not so media friendly is that faith.... What has Tebow overcome? ******************* "The solar eclipse is like a woman breastfeeding in a restaurant.
