If that's true...the question is what other coaches are worth $4.5M per year?

Here's my list....nobody.

Why is Saban worth $4.5M...the only reason is he won a National Championship with a team from the SEC and somebody thought he might be willing to come back to the college game.

The problem is any other offer we make must be well below that amount. Right out of the gate we are telling a coach you are not respected nearly as much as another coach. We are also telling the fan base we did not get the best coach we could...or another way to say it would be we know there are better coaches than the one we have.

The bigger problem will be the AL fan base. We have no patience...as soon as the new coach struggles...we'll jump him. Why...because it's in our DNA. We can't help it...we are unrealistic and in denial. We should have stayed with Shula. More and more I am regretting the decision to fire Shula. This could be the biggest mistake we have ever made. What a mess...

We had to make a strong offer. Saban is the top guy on our list and he's already got a huge contract. We couldn't offer $2.5 mil to a guy already making over $4 mil a year. People understand the economics of it, so it's not a big deal.

If we give him that much we probably could have gotten Bob Stoops for that kind of $$$

Honestly, have you hit your head? That was an absolutely pathetic post. No one in their right mind thinks we should have kept Shula. The program is moving NOW in the right direction. Let this thing work...give it time.

No Way man. Everybody likes Shula as a person, but, when it came time for the big decisions, in the heat of the moment, he was a poor decision maker (or bad play caller) however you wanna say it. Yes, he would have gotten better over time, but that type of patience was not something we could afford. JMHO

Nitwit...you think we need to "let it work?" What should we continue to "work?" There is nothing working...as a matter of fact...every day without a head coach it get worse...we are losing recruits every day.

We HOPE the program is moving in the right direction. I hope Saban accepts; but I am still convinced that he's going to reject Bama. JMHO.

I"m not like ssmith who can't even figure out what is happening and why. He thinks we've been talking about Okla St. Hmmmmmmm. Geritol must be a bit too strong for him.

Nah, i don't think that is that important to most coaches. They know their value. Just because we offer one coach so much, doesn't mean we have to offer that to everyone.

Let's say saban says no, and we go after Paul johnson, and we offer him 2.2 million. I doubt he will refuse just because we didn't offer him what we offered someone with obvious better credentials. It's still a raise for him, a huge raise, and he will have ample opportunity in the future to increase that pay. When he wins a NC, like Saban already has, then he can expect a significant raise. ;-)

After all, Mike Shula got one for winning 10 games. LOL

Love it when the guys with 5 posts come out of nowhere to tell us that we need to stop thinking about Saban/Petrino and that we are in a huge mess.

Again, these be nervous times down on the plains Wink

I don't think money is the only option for Saban here, though. Word is that he is not happy in the NFL. If Alabama is indeed his "dream job," then the $25-35 million over 7 years could be tempting enough. That's more than he'd make in the remainder of his contract in Miami.
