My mom is a 20+ year University employee and pretty much knows everything that goes on on campus. I asked her what she's heard last night and she said Shula stays on the condition that he replaces the offensive coaching staff. Rader will resign to keep Shula from having to fire a friend. The Price coaches that Shula kept on to be with the players Price recruited are gone as well.

My thoughts on the potential replacements are as follows:

Saban/Spurrier - I'd love to see it but won't believe it until it happens.

Rodriquez/Petrino - Seem like good coaches, but both appear to be in ideal situations. If they stay where they are the WV/Louisville game could decide who plays in the NC every year. Also, building a maintaining a winner in the SEC is much different than the Big East.

Grobe/Schiano - They've done well at traditionally horrible football schools, but they play in weak conferences. Could they handle the pressure of the SEC?

Gailey - No. GT's a middle of the road team in a weak ACC this year.

Johnson - I don't know very much about him, but again, he's playing weak opponents at a school where there are no football expectations (other than beat Army).

Unless there's someone out there that's totally off the radar, there's nobody right now that I feel comfortable with as a long term solution. I don't think Shula is a long term solution either, but I think we would better off giving one year with the new staff and then making a change next year if that doesn't work out. If we fire Shula now and don't get the right man to replace him we're probably looking at another decade of mediocrity.

If we KEEP Shula we're looking at another decade of mediocrity. We will be having this same discussion next year. Giving Shula another year is simply wasting another year!

We need to make the tough decisions and hire the right coach.

Congrats on your mom working for the University for 20+ years but I don't think she has access to what is going on behind closed doors. Everything so far is rumor and hear-say. We need to be patient and let this search/firing/grabass go on.

I didn't say it was fact. Just what she's heard. Nobody knows what's true or what's rumor right now.

Sorry, but your post makes no sense. Why tell us Shula is staying and then speculate on replacements? FYI, there is no such thing as the "perfect coach". If you want to nitpick on why guys like Petrino, Rodriguez, Johnson etc
won't work, then we'll NEVER make the change.
You just have to go with the best guy and the best fit and cross your fingers the right choice was made. We already KNOW Shula ain't it.

All you folks saying Shula is staying need to at least keep it under your hats until after Thanksgiving. We want to enjoy our weekend!

Tide311, I agree. What is being said in Columbia?

Nothing at all is being said In Columbia other than the rumors of Miami. But even that isn't being played very heavily here in Columbia. It was a talk on the local ESPN radio show but only involved Miami...no talk about Alabama till later on in the Night when Spurrier stated that he was flattered by rumors of Miami and Alabama. I told people yesturday that if ESPN(Sportscenter, PTI, Around the Horn) don't pick up the Rumor talk by today then chances are it WILL NOT HAPPEN. If the country doesn't think its plausable...chances are it isn't.

If you were a true Alabama fan, you'd give Shula time-Bear Bryant didn't do it overnight.

Please excuse me while I throw up! To compare Shula to Bryant is like telling me my golf game is like Tigers. True we do play with Nike balls but that is it.

I am so tired of hearing that if we were true alabama fans that we would give shula time. This man is not the answer at alabama. If you can not see that then you are blind. Four years and you sat we need to give him more time? Did you not see a totally clueless miss st team beat us at home.Give me a break.

Thanks for writing back Tide311. As you can imagine, the rumor mill is running rampant here in Tuscaloosa. I, for one, hate it. I have been a Bama fan for over 40 yrs. I saw us get beat by Memphis St. in the late 80's, by Vandy in the mid 80's and by Southern Miss in the 80's and 90's. Besides a couple of good years and one great year in the 90's, Bama football has not been among the elite. Is this Shula's fault? Hardly. He came into the worse situation possible and restored some stability to a program that was on the brink of extinction. Is he the best coach in America? I don't believe he is, but I do believe he has done a decent job under the circumstances. I will not go into the reseaons why I think he should stay, but hire new offensive and special teams coaches because it would just fall upon deaf ears. I will probably be blasted as an apologist, barner, or one of the other names associated to ones that have a different opinion. Bottom line is that I love anything BAMA and want to win in a bad kind of way. With that said, I will support whatever decision is made and will support the coach and team, whoever that may be next year. ROLL TIDE!!!!

Where have you come from Tricia - and have you been around the last 4 season? True alabama fans want better for the team and for the state, and for football...

Thanks for playing tricia, but your terribly, terribly wrong. Bryant DID do it overnight. His first year 1958 Alabama only went 5-4-1. Not that great of a record, unless you take into consideration that the Alabama teams of the previous 3 seasons only won 4 games combined!! If that's not doing it overnight then I don't know what is. In Bryant's first season he laid the groundwork for the 1961 National Championship. What did Shula do his first year? He laid the ground work for mediocrity and dissapointment.
