A few months ago, most authors on this forum were busy taking exception with the college football "experts" who had picked Bama to finish about 4th or so in the SEC West. Some of these same experts even ventured to say that '06 was the year that Bama would really experience the repercussions of the probation - '06 would be a rebuilding year, but watch out for the Tide in '07.
Well, here we are after the fact, and all of a sudden it's the entire coaching staff's fault, CMS should be fired along with all the other riff-raff, etc. Turns out the "experts" were right about on track. We lost one game we were supposed to win (MSSt). Everything else went according to the preseason predictions. Yes, we had some questionable coaching calls along the way. But what about the calls that went our way? Had that 4th Qtr pass went for a touchdown instead of a turnover on downs against Auburn, everyone would be talking about CMS's audacity and coaching acumen. Face the facts, folks. The Tide were overachievers last year. Their talent level this year was not that good. There was a reason for the 3-man front most of the year. So too, for the "swinging gate" at right tackle. There IS something to be said for execution, and more times than not, we didn't have it. Breakdowns on both sides of the ball, including special teams. Before you persecute CMS let him coach on an even playing field. I think we'll have that in '07, and if we go 6-6 then...well...I'll gladly keep my peace. ROLL TIDE BABY!!! |

Play calling? CMS did not: -Miss any field goals/XPs in Fayetteville -Get flagged for interference in Knoxville -Throw an interception in Gainsville -Miss a tackle in Baton Rouge -Miss blocks (or fumble) against Auburn ROLL TIDE BABY!!! |

You are correct KTown - but here's the problem - Shula saw all those things too. He was in a position to win the Ark game - but made some bad decisions. He was aware of JPW's inexperience too. He should have been aware of the weak offensive line as well. Oh, and by the way, penalties are a part of the game and we did not have an abundance of them (say, compared to MSU0. The bottome line is Shula was watching the same team we all did, even with the mistakes. He did not nothing to compensate for those weaknesses. All teams have weaknesses - a sign of a good coach is to learn from your mistakes, make the necessary changes to compensate for mistakes and weaknesses and win the one's that you are supposed and and even surprise a few that you're not.... Shula has done none of these things. Try again though (although it is getting old) |

Running the ball up the middle on the goal line. Punting the ball down one score with only 2:30 left. Playing for field goals. Cruddy clock maanagement. Still calling the offensive plays instead of delegating that responsibility to a full time OC. In general playing not to lose. I've had enough. |

It's apparent that the forum is decidedly polarized. I see a good bit of 20/20 hindsight, but I also see an encouraging undertone - Everyone, whether they support CMS or not, seems to have the good of the University and the Football program at heart. I hope that decisions made over the next few days/weeks will support that.

Well. As far as waiting for Shula to go 6-6 in 2007 then making a decision.
I think that we could let the entire coaching staff go except for the graduate assistants and go 6-6 next year with our schedule. As far as overachievers last year. 10 win seasons with the kind of schedules we have now aren't what they used to be. With the players that he had this year this was potentially a 10 game season. Good coaches don't go completely into the ditch when they lose good players. They adjust. Louisville is a good example this year. Forget USC and other programs. This is really more about the tone, tempo and decision making that was on display this year...the fourth year of a failed experiment. With better mental discipline this year... We...Could...Go...All...The...Way |

I agree Ktown - I really tried to stay with Shula - I thought even up to the MSU game that Shula would see things that needed to be adjusted, at least in some small measure just acknowledge that he needed to learn some things, etc. But I never saw it. If there was any hope we would have seen it in the Auburn game. Nothing new - it just seems to me that he does not think that anything is really that wrong, "just some bad luck and all" type attitude that I cannot stomach any longer. And realize I hate to say that I think he needs to go. I grew up in Florida - My father grew up in Alabama as a big fan and moved to Fla for work. He took me to Miami Dolphin games in the 70's - I had two great loves, Shula and the dolphins and Bear and the Tide. Right now, I don't care about the dolphins, just the Tide. I want my sons to see how great Alabama was and can be. They are 15 and 11 - neither one of them old enough to see great Alabama football - just read about it in the books. I want that to change. |

lowerytodd -
I respect your opinion. At least you have been on the forum through the season, and didn't just join this week to get on the Bash Shula Bandwagon. You too, Mahout. BTW, my family moved from Huntsville to Miami Beach when I was about 6. I also grew up with the great Dolphins teams, and I have to admit, it may cloud me a bit with the current situation. I have to stand firm and say though, that '07 will be the apples-to-apples comparison year. Yes, teams lose good players, but when you get a harsh probation as we did, it's not the same - starts with recruiting and snowballs from there. ROLL TIDE BABY!!! |

KTown, I hate to say it, but statements like that is just asking for it from the others.
I too, have the same feelings, there is no way we will ever know unless cms stays. Oh dear, we will both be labled barners, again. Roll Tide! If you're gonna go, go all the way, if you're gonna stay, stand your ground, if you can't run with the big dogs, big dog let me walk you out, if you can't lead let me by you, if you won't follow get out of the way, you're taking up space. Ktown - how do you reconcile the lack of change for Shula in the past 4 years. The terrible offense that is always blamed on the players and the seemingly poor management and decisions during the game? I am not trying to be antagonistic - just want to see you reconcile that with how other coaches with poorer teams (in regard to talent) with your hope of seeing things change next year. I can't see it. |

"The Others" also wanted our baseball coach fired a few months ago. I'm not too concerned about labels. I've been a staunch Bama supporter since the 60's. I'd say that allows me to discuss such things on this forum. (no offense to the youngsters - we don't want to start more mudslinging) ROLL TIDE BABY!!! |

KTown, It is easy for these yahoo's to pick up a phone, or type up an analysis of the play calling when there is no pressure on them. Let's see them post up the $6 - $10 Million it will cost fire CMS his staff and hire another coach and his staff away from another school. Nevermind. It is so easy when they can sit back and tell someone else what they should do and it does not cost them a thing. Or say they would have chosen a different play or they would have done something different, when the reality of the situation is they do not suffer any consequences of their "hypothetical" choice. Am I mad about losing. YES! Do I think some mistakes have been made. YES! Do I want to make the situation worse. NO!!! Face it, at the begining of the season people were predicting losses to FL, LSU, TN, AU and possibly Ark (Who by the way is the SEC West Champ - Which no one predicted). The ONLY loss that was not predicted was Miss St. GROW UP people. UA has Never and Will Never win every game on its schedule by at least 30 points. To listen to everyone on the Internet or FineBum, because UA is UA it is suppose to do just that. Heck, if you read Ray Melick today - even Franchiphony was only predicting to go 4-8 in 2006. So yes, lets fire Shula for doing better in 2005 & 2006 than he should have with the MESS that he inherited from Stallings (Yes, he is not innocent in this mess), Dubose, Franchione and Price (Yes, some of his assistants are on Shula's Staff.) Moore and Co. hired a good moral person, with decent x's and o's skills and no head coaching experience. They did this because, HE WAS THE ONLY COACH THEY COULD GET. Oh and give it up thinking that UA is an unlimited pocket book. If I am not mistaken, Spurrier was available 4 years ago when UA hire Shula. People just Grow Up and Take your medicine! "If you have dedication and pride and never quit you will be a winner. The price of victory is high but so are its rewards." Coach Paul W. Bryant |

You said it, JBama. He inherited a MESS. And I'll take back what I said about everyone having the good of the program and the university at heart. There is some knee-jerk headhunting going on here. My job brought me to Knoxville several years ago, and while I haven't had lots to cheer about on the field, I've always felt that the Bama Family was distinguished from the UT folks in the way they conducted themselves off the field - more teamwork, less negativism, less fair-weather fans, etc. I may have gotten ahead of myself there, too.
