By the way, the students have only been saying that phrase for the past 5 years or so. It is not a part of the song. It is just something a few people foolishly started saying and it caught on.

The University of Mississippi is desperately trying to change its image nationally in an effort to attract better professors, funding, students and athletes. Having the 08 Presidential Debate on campus was a huge step. Negative attention like this sets the University back big time. I applaud the administrators for stepping up.

Thank you!

Sure, the students have a first amendment right to say that, but the University also has the right to stop playing the song regardless of what the students think.

So what is your point? If you are trying to turn this into a constitutional issue, you are not going to win that battle.

You totally disregarded what I said originally though:

I indicated as such earlier that it is a petty extortion attempt by the Ole Miss chancellor into conforming the speech of the Ole Miss students to suit his needs (which I firmly believe has more to do with collecting donations and/or the acquisition or continuance of some other corporate sponsorships/affiliations than anything else)..

So it's not a constitutional issue, but he is making an attempt to leverage/wrest the 1st Amendment away from Ole Miss students and he makes no bones about that..

It's unfortunate that cold, hard cash has become the driving force behind "amateur" athletics these days..

And invariably, wherever you find lots of money..then lots of the associated politics that comes with it isn't terribly far behind.

Ok I understand. And yes, I agree. This is an attempt to keep sponsorships and donations. I would do the same. He is basically telling the students "do you want a decent football team, or would you rather chant some stupid cheer?"

Nobody is trying to use that kind of trash to represent the university, so you're throwing out a complete red herring here.

David

I'm I?
Ole miss heads of state say we have a problem with possibly offending people with the words of our cheer. But the people the song is "offending" are raised in a culture that wallers in offensivness, which is rap but suddenly becomes enraged upon entering the stadium???????? Talk about a red herring, sounds fishy to me or just old "do as I say, not as I do".
The whole thing looks self inflicted to me.

Which brings me to my next point:

(from the article....and forgetting that LSU is next up on the docket for Alabama for a sec Wink ):

quote:

The move to abolish the chant began in October when the Ole Miss student government association passed a resolution to change the phrase to "to hell with LSU." The Faculty Senate later took a vote in support of the association and Jones.

OK..

Now Chancellor Jones has just demonstrated the ultimate hypocrisy..

The phrase "the South will rise again" is to be officially removed and now in substitution the phrase "to hell with LSU" is to be inserted instead (which the article here says that Chancellor Jones supports)..

OK then...what does Chancellor Jones mean exactly when he says: "to hell with LSU"?..

Is Chancellor Jones trying to communicate his wishes that anybody associated with LSU should be condemned to eternal damnation?..

In any context, isn't the phrase "to hell with LSU" offensive to any players, staff, employees, and fans of LSU as well?..

In essence, Chancellor Jones is just substituting the offensive nature toward one subset of people and redirecting it toward another..

Chancellor Jones seems to be a real braniac when it comes to managing 'offensive' speech.

Isn't there a sons of redneck racist veterans website ya'll can join? Maybe somewhere that you could talk about why the civil war was ok and the south was right? Perhaps they'd even let you say the N word because black people get to say it and it makes you angry that you don't get to? And maybe you could talk to each other about the difference between black people and N word people? And then you could say how there are white N word people and black N word people? And maybe talk about how the Klan had admirable intentions and aims and purposes a long time ago? And possibly even talk about how some of your best friends are black, so you can't be a racist? How'd that be? I would say I'd help you find it, because I know ya'll would be happier there. And I know one must exist. But I'm scared to look for it.

I'd be will to bet that if you rounded up 10 people, white, black or purple in Oxford that were "offended" by the cheer, you could go to thier car and find Nas, Lil Wayne, K. West, T.I Jay Z or Bizzy Bones in the CD rack or changer!

Worse. He's an idiot.

He's forcing them to remove a phrase that is INTERPRETED BY SOME LISTENERS as offensive, and replacing it with a phrase that is INTENDED BY THE SPEAKERS to offend.

So ACCIDENTALLY offending is dangerous and must be banned. However, INTENTIONALLY offending people is endorsed by the school?

Again:

quote:

Remember the Rose Bowl we'll win then!
Go, roll to victory,
Hit your stride,
You're Dixie's football pride, Crimson Tide!

Should the phrase "you're Dixie's football pride" be removed/abolished/substituted for from the Alabama fight song (since it is in fact part of "old South" symbols and language")?

Being someone born and raised in the north, that is exactly what "the south will rise again" means to me. Sorry, not trying to be offensive, just that it is what comes to mind. Especially since I have no doubt the ones shouting it are white, drunken frat kids.

The university chancellor is concerned about the image being presented by his school. I thought I read somewhere that the phrase was used by some groups that opposed integration. That association alone is enough to get it banned from a public university.
