I didn't think "South" was the issue here. I would think the "will rise" part is what could be construed as racist.

It's the sentiment of the whole statement that has a negative connotation not the term "South."

Good read.

The issue of divisiveness is one reason I have a problem with it. Football (along with other sports) are supposed to unite us. That's what I hated the most about the Mike Vick saga in Atlanta. It turned what used to be a fairly color-blind fanbase against one another mostly along racial lines. I hate to see that when football is a fantastic opportunity to bring a diverse group of people together.

On a pragmatic level, it's something that can't help with recruiting when the vast majority of the kids you're recruiting are black. It's time for them to let go of this and move on, IMO.

but its ok to use THE MOST offensive word as long as its sung by a rapper, used in connection with the F, MF, hoe, curse words associated with sex and drugs.........right?
maybe I dont understand, and I'm from Mississippi.

It's just that I sometimes get a little more frustrated with people who voluntarily choose to remain ignorant..

Sure, the students have a first amendment right to say that, but the University also has the right to stop playing the song regardless of what the students think.

So what is your point? If you are trying to turn this into a constitutional issue, you are not going to win that battle.

How about the New York YANKEES? Does anyone hold the pinstripers, their owners, and their fans responsible for the atrocities of Sherman and his army? Of course not. Our society has become as "sensitive" as some of the posters on this board.

Nobody is trying to use that kind of trash to represent the university, so you're throwing out a complete red herring here.

What an individual student means when he says "the South will rise again" is futile. What does matter is the way recruits and donors interpret that statement.

90% of America would construe that statement to mean that those students want the "old south" way of life to return, including the segregation of black people from mainstream society.

By the way, the students have only been saying that phrase for the past 5 years or so. It is not a part of the song. It is just something a few people foolishly started saying and it caught on.

The University of Mississippi is desperately trying to change its image nationally in an effort to attract better professors, funding, students and athletes. Having the 08 Presidential Debate on campus was a huge step. Negative attention like this sets the University back big time. I applaud the administrators for stepping up.

The students can still chant the phrase, just like the fans at a Bama game would still chant Rammer Jammer with or without the band playing the tune.

You totally disregarded what I said originally though:

I indicated as such earlier that it is a petty extortion attempt by the Ole Miss chancellor into conforming the speech of the Ole Miss students to suit his needs (which I firmly believe has more to do with collecting donations and/or the acquisition or continuance of some other corporate sponsorships/affiliations than anything else)..

So it's not a constitutional issue, but he is making an attempt to leverage/wrest the 1st Amendment away from Ole Miss students and he makes no bones about that..

It's unfortunate that cold, hard cash has become the driving force behind "amateur" athletics these days..

And invariably, wherever you find lots of money..then lots of the associated politics that comes with it isn't terribly far behind.
