Repeat after me. Symbolism. I see plenty of crosses in churches. I doubt any of them look like the cross Jesus was crucified on. So you see, people don't worship the images they worship the deity behind them.

Like I said, you knew that but just wanted to stir some shat because that's what you are a shat stirrer.
Beats reading 50 posts about how Obama pissed you off today... Wink

I didn't see the episode, but for those who have never seen the show, the whole premise is basically that he is completely socially awkward and does things that make me cringe while watching from the comfort of my living room.

Mild example: In one of the recent episodes, he sees two friends walking their adopted daughter in a stroller. The adopted daughter is obviously oriental. He asks the friends whether the daughter has shown any interest in using chopsticks.
I probably shouldn't have laughed at that...

I thought it was funny when I used to be able to watch Bugs Bunny cartoons with the little black pygmies with big white lips dancing around a boiling pot with Bugs in it. Don't get to see that anymore due to political correctness.
I used to laugh at those too...

Here's another. The SOB signed the hate crimes bill today.

I wonder how long it will take to declare some pastor or preacher a criminal when he calls out the homos for their abomination. It won't happen quick but it will happen eventually. That's what happens in a Fabian socialist society.

Sounds like it won't be a problem in your church though.

Why did I put "picture" in quotes? Well...I have always found it intriguing that people treat supposed paintings of Jesus as worthy of worship, especially since Jesus the Nazarene couldn't have remotely looked like that. We (the collective Christian "we") go bonkers over paintings and images that are really of typical 15th and 16th century Europeans. I have news for you-- Jesus was definitely not European.

No doubt Jesus wasn't European but that's not the point. Of course you know that but it doesn't matter to a back handed Christian.
The Bible clearly admonishes us to not worship idols. Yet, somebody puts up a mass-produced copy of a copy of a copy of a painting from 1500 of what somebody thought Jesus would look like (amazingly, he bears a strong resemblance to Duke so-and-so from 'round the way) and CHRISTIANS proceed to kneel and bow and pray in the general direction of said drawing. Are you contending that such a representation warrants worship since it "represents" God, even if it was likely mass-produced in China?

you're smarter than this. i know you don't believe this for one minute. i don't know any Christians that worship a picture. it's just a symbol to help remind the followers of Christ what their purpose here on earth is and it serves as a reminder to these believers of who their one true god is.

you already know this too. I'm calling bull**** on you.
A picture reminds you of that?

for some yes, myself no. I don't need it however if some do, it is ok and it's not idolatry. God uses many different ways to reach his followers right? If a 15th century painting is the starting point for some, than so be it. if it brings more people to God, than that's a good thing. Right?
Okay, that's a better argument.

I'm glad you approve. Roll Eyes

I agree. Nice change of pace. Sometimes one has to "stir the pot" to create some healthy debate/dialogue.

Probably not. The only conceivable way that might be possible is if said pastor encourages violence with the intent of his comments resulting in violence, and even then he should be protected by the 1st amendment.

Do you think racism and homosexuality are equally disfavorable in the eyes of God?

Not really going anywhere with that, just curious.

I believe He called one an abomination. He has a chosen people but through Christ we can all accepted.

Not really going anywhere? Now Tater, do you really expect me to believe that?

But just to humor you I'll answer. Any sin is disfavorable in the eyes of God. There are none any worse than another.

But that's not what we're talking about is it? As it stands now in America, one is celebrated and one you possibly can go to jail for.

Since when did you get interested in the viewpoints of God? Aren't you agnostic or atheist?

I really wasn't going anywhere with it. I was just thinking about it. Thinking about the many pastors (I presume, no idea how many) who spend so much time railing against homosexuality. I think racism can parallel homosexuality in that it is a lifestyle. Of those that I know who are overtly racist, I doubt they pray for forgiveness for it. But I've never heard of a pastor railing against that. Not saying I don't have tendencies like that, either.

If I see an orange Monte Carlo with huge tires traveling at speeds between 10 and 50 mph on a city street, then turn abruptly, I'll catch myself thinking, "Not surpised." Everybody does it to an extent, so I'm not trying to act holier than thou.

I'm neither atheist or agnostic. Simply finding my own way because, over the years, I've become less than impressed with the "church homes" I've looked for. Even the church I grew up in. Still full of great people who I think do a good job of concentrating on the love aspect of Christianity. Yet they have become consumed in an argument over whether a contemporary worship service is necessary, so much so that it has caused a split.

I'd rather not waste my Sunday mornings arguing over things like that.

I left my previous church because, as Minister of Music, I found myself caught between an aging, unenthusiastic congregation that wanted things to stay as they had for most of the previous 123 years, and a should-have-been-growing-but-actually-shrinking group of teens and young adults whose input was routinely disregarded. When the pastor left me hanging out like wet clothes, I knew it was time to go. I can play everything from sacred hymns to hip-hop, but I prefer not to play them at the same time, if you know what I mean.

Ehh... I'm Catholic/conservative, but I've seen enough of his show to know that the real butt of the joke is more likely to be himself than the church. It doesn't sound like the funniest thing in the world, but I'm not feeling the outrage.
